Still time to enjoy a backyard swimming pool this summer!

Splish, splash – it’s the sound of summer in Australia.

And with the warmest season now well and truly here, Blue Haven is reporting an increase in swimming pool sales.

Blue Haven Pools Chief Executive Officer Remonda Martinez says it’s not too late to enjoy the many lifestyle benefits a backyard swimming pool has to offer this summer.

“When the weather is warm and the days are long, many of our clients realise how much they want a swimming pool in their backyard,” Mrs Martinez says.

“It’s a lifestyle choice that people will often overlook during winter, but when it’s hot and the summer has really kicked in we have an influx of enquiries and sales.”

For those looking for the instant enjoyment a backyard swimming pool affords, vinyl pools are affordable and quick and easy to install.

But concrete and fibreglass pools are as equally popular, with minimal wait time dependent on council.

The biggest enquiries however have been for Blue Haven’s Enviro Smart Pool with sales figures increasing by 75 per cent since it was launched in February 2012.

Consumers are quickly realising the benefits of the advanced concrete pool system that is the smartest, safest and most advanced on the market today.

The Enviro Smart Pool is cheap to run with an 80 per cent saving off running costs, plus it is virtually maintenance free.

“Swimming pools afford their owners a great lifestyle, but they also take time to maintain, and consumers these days want the benefits of a pool without with out any maintenance hassles,” Mrs Martinez says.

“The Enviro Smart Mineral Pool cuts maintenance time in half, so owners can spend more time enjoying their pool and less time maintaining it.”

Have you registered your swimming pool?

Homeowners are required to register their backyard swimming pool and have compulsory safety checks of fences under tough new laws introduced in October.
A comprehensive review of the Swimming Pools Act 1992 has been finalised which identified a number of amendments designed to enhance the safety of backyard swimming pools in NSW.
The move will bring NSW into line with most of the other states with the previous Act requiring pool owners to simply construct a fence around their pool without any ongoing checks.
Blue Haven Pools Chief Executive Officer Remonda Martinez applauds the revised Act that requires all pool owners to register their backyard swimming pool to ensure regular safety checks.
“Safety should be paramount with a backyard swimming pool and this new legislation will help give pool owners peace of mind knowing their backyard pool is not only enjoyable for the family but safe,” Mrs Martinez says.
The online state-wide register of NSW’s 340,000 swimming pools will be held by the Division of Local Government and will record the address, type of pool, date of construction and the date of any safety inspection.
Safety inspections would be run by councils, and include all public swimming pools and those in hotels, resort and apartment blocks.
The Swimming Pools Amendment Act 2012 commenced on 29 October 2012 and makes a number of amendments to the Swimming Pools Act 1992: Information is provided below regarding the impact of these legislative amendments for pool owners.
Pool Owners:
1. Swimming pool owners are required to register their swimming pools on an online register to be provided by the NSW State Government.
2. Swimming Pool owners will be required to self-assess, and state in the register that, to the best of their knowledge, their swimming pool complies with the applicable standard when registering their pool.
3. There is a penalty for owners who fail to register a swimming pool (penalty notice amount of $220).
4. Swimming pool owners will be required to provide a valid swimming pool compliance certificate before being able to sell or lease a property with a pool.
5. Accredited certifiers under the Building Professional Act 2005 may conduct swimming pool inspections initiated by the pool owner.

The Act includes a staged implementation process to facilitate:
1. The development and implementation of the Swimming Pools Register (to commence by no later than 29 April 2013)
2. Registration by pool owners of pools (after the register commences and by no later than 29 October 2013)
3. Councils’ inspection programs (to be developed in consultation with the community, adopted and commenced by no later than 29 October 2013)
4. Mandatory inspections by councils of tourist, visitor and multi-occupancy developments, and pools associated with property sale and lease (to commence by no later than 29 April 2014).

To check if a pool meets legislative requirements, pool owners and occupiers should contact their local council in the first instance.

Outdoor entertaining

Summer is just around the corner and the warm weather heralds a return to relaxed barbecues and outdoor fare. Add a new Blue Haven pool to the mix and you’ve got the perfect setting for a summer soire. But before you move the party outside it is important to first assess your outdoor space.

A few weathered plastic chairs, disposable cups and rusty mosquito zapper isn’t likely to set the scene for a memorable alfresco affair.

It is important to treat your outdoor area just as you would any other room in your home. A little planning and a few accessories can transform your backyard and poolside area into a welcoming and comfortable outdoor entertaining space.

“The swimming pool is like the centrepiece, but the right furnishings and accessories can really set the scene for poolside entertaining,” says Blue Haven Pools CEO Remonda Martinez.

Whether you’re planning a relaxed meal with family or a summer bash with all of your friends, these tips will ensure outdoor entertaining is a breeze.

  • Transform your outdoor area into a twilight paradise with the right lighting. Use hanging lanterns, fairy lights and enclosed candles to create a soft glow.
  • Before guests arrive ensure the gardens are manicured, grass cut, pavements swept and outdoor furniture cleaned.
  • Create depth in small outdoor areas with garden mirrors.
  • Add personality with weather resistant wall décor and cushions.
  • If it’s a day time pool party, ensure there are plenty of dry towels and water to keep your guests hydrated.

Top ten tips for keeping your swimming pool sparkling this summer

The swimming pool is without a doubt one of the most coveted places in the home during the warmer months. Across the country kids will practically spend their entire weekend splashing around while mum and dad relax poolside. The backyard pool is also as appealing for neighbours and friends who will drop by to join in the fun.

So how do you keep your swimming pool looking it’s best, free of leaves, dirt, algae and bugs?

Here Blue Haven Swimming Pools gives you their ten top tips for keeping your swimming pool sparkling this summer:

1) Keep the water clean with a skimmer at least once a week to keep it free from bugs and leaves.
2) Use a pool cleaner or vacuum or brush the debris on the bottom of the pool towards the main filter. This will give your pool a sparkling effect.
3) Clean and replace your filter every 2 to 5 years. It is important to regularly check your filter.
4) It is important to regularly check the chlorine and pH levels.
5) Regularly empty the basket in the skimmer to keep it free of leaves, bugs and debris.
6) Wind can carry twigs, leaves and debris into the pool so choosing the right plants for your poolside landscaping can be the difference between relaxing poolside or spending hours skimming leaves from the pool’s surface.
7) Get a pool cover. This will stop any leaves and debris from falling into the pool and it will keep the temperature of the water warmer and is effective against evaporation.
8) The taller the pool fence the less likely debris is to fall into the pool. Having a high fence doesn’t mean you have to block out the view either; glass fencing is equally as effective at keeping any unwanted bits and pieces from flying into the pool.
9) Get things right the first time around! Some pool filters are easier to clean than others so do your research. Also regular maintenance ensures your pool filters will work more efficiently.
10) Install a Blue Haven Enviro Smart Mineral Pool. Its Hydrospin Filtration System fitted between the pump and the filter separates out solids down to 40 micron, reducing the frequency of cleaning by 50 per cent.

Say goodbye to nasty pool bacteria

Just because a pool looks clean doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe to swim in. From the minute the pool is filled with water, bacteria starts to grow on the pool walls, pipes, plumbing and in the filter.

Bacteria starts to breed, multiply, divide and grow within minutes. The bacteria colony begins to protect itself against invasion from lethal factors such as chlorine or bromine. A protective coating called Exopolysaccharide Film or biofilm is formed. Biofilm protects the bacteria and provides a perfect breeding environment as well as a source to gather food by absorbing particles out of the water.

Chlorine, bromine and ozone cannot kill the bacteria inside biofilm. When you treat a pool with chlorine, salt chlorinators, ozone, bacquacil, bromine and even ionic sterilization, it only kills around 10% of the bacteria in a pool. The other 90% is the bacteria that you can’t see on the surface of the pool and other hard to reach places.

Blue Haven’s exclusive new Enviro Smart Mineral Pool is extremely effective in removing pool bacteria. Around 90% of bacteria in a pool are caused by biofilm which cannot be destroyed by chlorine or ozone (unless a toxic 50ppm is used which is harmful to the skin.)

The Enviro Smart Mineral Pool’s revolutionary technology removes the biofilm without the use of harsh chemicals. The minerals work by simply loosening the biofilm from their substrate, then coagulating them so that they are easily filtered out.

The hidden bacteria are easily destroyed by the mineral converter without the use of harsh chemicals to ensure softer, safer pool water for swimmers.

As well as ensuring cleaner pool water, Blue Haven’s Enviro Smart Mineral Pool provides superior energy and water savings while harnessing the riches of nature’s ocean and mineral lagoons.

Benefits of this exciting new pool technology include:
• Mineral infused bathing
• Reduction in water wastage of up to 12,000 litres a year
• Saving of up to 80% on operating costs
• Safer, cleaner water
• No added chlorine, algaecides or clarifiers
• Virtually maintenance free

Blue Haven Pools … your natural choice.

How to choose the right pool for your backyard

Spring has sprung – the days are getting longer and the temperature is heating up. Pool enquiries are up too according to Blue Haven Pools Chief Executive Officer Remonda Martinez.

“The start of spring is typically one of our busier months for new pool enquiries,” Mrs Martinez says.

“Many homeowners dream of the lifestyle benefits that a new pool will afford them, however they are unsure of what type of pool would best suit their backyard and their needs.”

Here we look at the different options available and the benefits of each different pool types.

Concrete pools

The beauty of a concrete pool is that the possibilities are endless. Concrete pools offer more choice and flexibility and can be made in almost any shape, size or depth. Their versatility means customers can choose to add extra features such as an infinity or disappearing edge, heating, fibre optic lighting, water feature, beach entry or wading area. Concrete pools take around eight weeks to build and are suited to difficult or sloping blocks, plus they are strong and durable.

Fibreglass pools

Blue Haven’s range of fibreglass pools is durable and modern, and best of all they are quick and easy to install. Fibreglass pools come with a special coating that resists algae growth, making them easy to clean and maintain. They are also available in a range ofcolours. From lap pools to contemporary designs and swim spas there is something for everyone.

Aboveground pools

Prefabricated and quick to install, above ground pools offer an affordable alternative. They can be set either partially in the ground with decking, or aboveground, depending on your needs. Blue Haven’s range is still one of the strongest on the market and includes salt-water models and DIY kits. Customers can choose from standard sizes or they can custom design to suit their requirements. In keeping with Blue Haven’s iconic mascot, their range of aboveground pools are so strong you could invite an elephant to swim in it!

Swimming pool makeovers increasing in demand

Is your pool looking old and outdated?

Blue Haven Pools can help give your tired backyard pool a makeover in time for summer.

Remonda Martinez Chief Executive Officer of Blue Haven Pools says swimming pool renovations are increasing in popularity and are the most cost effective way to transform your backyard swimming pool from drab to fab.

“We have a number of clients who have purchased an older-style property and want to give the property a makeover both inside and out,” Mrs Martinez says.

“In the 1960s and 1970s the backyard pool was either positioned in the furthest corner away from the house or took up most of the backyard, whereas the modern look is more streamlined with a large outdoorentertaining area for a relaxed day spa or resort feel.”

Whether it’s converting a large, unimaginative shaped pool into a modern streamlined design, or giving pool finishes a facelift, Blue Haven Pools’ Renovations Team can help transform the look of your backyard pool.

While many clients opt for a complete overhaul, incorporating a new shape and theme with entertaining area and landscaping, even the subtlest renovations can make a dramatic impact.

“A new finish or modern decking options are all it takes to have your pool looking like it’s brand new,” Mrs Martinez says.

“Where pebblecrete and brick pavers may have been in vogue thirty years ago, modern day designs have a glass like finish with more paving options such as sandstone or terracotta.”

Blue Haven has a wide range of pool renovation options to suit any style and budget and the renovations team can assist with developing design ideas to transform your old pool into the perfect backyard accessory.

Modern pool design

If you were to take a walk down memory lane and have a sneak peak over the fence at a suburban backyard swimming pool during the 70s and 80s, chances are it would either be kidney shaped or an unimaginative rectangle.

Thankfully the possibilities with modern-day pool designs are endless. No longer do customers have to settle for stock-standard pool shapes, sizes or layouts, but rather they can incorporate a modern design that reflects the block and their personality and requirements.

Remonda Martinez Chief Executive Officer of Blue Haven Pools says today there is so much choice when it comes to pool design.

Pool design – the complete package…

From the design, to the materials, location and water-type, selecting the perfect swimming pool to suit the shape of your backyard and the needs of your family should not be a hurried decision.

The same care and attention to detail should also be invested when it comes to selecting the fencing and landscaping that will surround the pool.

Blue Haven Pools CEO Remonda Martinez says there’s more to creating a perfect swimming pool than the actual pool itself.

“While the pool is the centrepiece, it’s the surrounding landscaping, gardens, entertaining areas and fencing that complete the package,” Mrs Martinez says.

“The team at Blue Haven take a holistic approach to a new swimming pool and offer clients advice on everything from plants to fencing to ensure the client gets the most out of their swimming pool.”

Blue Haven’s Swimming Pool Landscaping Packages can be custom developed depending on clients needs and include fencing and decking. They also offer landscaping and complete project management and ensure that all council safety specifications are met.

“We understand that a swimming pool is a considerable investment so we want the choice of fencing or landscaping to compliment the carefully planned design,” Mrs Martinez says.

The use of frameless glass fencing is a popular trend, as it complements the streamline design of modern-day pool choices. Tropical, Balinese-inspired pool designs remain popular as well with feature walls in sandy hues and the use of timber decking, huts and cascading waterfalls to create a true holiday experience.
